Lately my friends and family have been expressing concern and surprise regarding how much I have been working. I wanted to let you all in on what a week looks like for me, using September 17th-24th as my example! It's a Thursday-Thursday because today is Thursday and I have a couple of things that I want to mention!
For context: I work in paid positions at Calories Restaurant and Bakery, Persephone Theatre, and On The Boards Staging Company. I am also an Artistic Associate at Embrace Theatre, an unpaid position. I did not include in this account any of my meal time or time to myself because there wasn't much of it!
This particular Thursday was the menu change at Calories, the restaurant and bakery where I work. I got up early to head to a tasting, which is something that Calories does so the staff can experience the dishes, learn about their ingredients, and learn speak about them correctly to the customer. We had the lunch tasting at 10:30 am, after which I went to SARCAN where I took in some bottles for Embrace Theatre's bottle drive. Following that, I headed to the gym, where I typically spend an hour and a half to two hours working out. This day was a rushed day as I had to get home to take care of my cat. I had taken him to the vet earlier in the week and was giving him some medication at regular intervals. After the gym, I came home and cleaned up and got some social media work done for both On The Boards and Embrace Theatre. On the Boards was presenting two shows that evening and Embrace Theatre was in Vancouver with a show as well. Then I headed back out to Calories for the dinner tasting, and came home, changed, and headed off to my shift at Persephone, where I work in Front of House. The show playing at Persephone right now, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, is a long show, so my shift began at 6:30 and ended at about 11. I got home and headed to sleep.
Friday morning I was awoken by my adorable kitty, who gets rather upset if I sleep in too late. I got up and booked an appointment with SARCAN on behalf of Embrace Theatre for Monday so we could take in the rest of the bottles from our fundraiser. I also looked over a document and suggested a few changes, as well as making some posts online for the company. I then walked over to where the bottles are stored and proceeded to sort the donations for an hour. Then I returned home to prepare to help my best friend earn her CanFit Pro Certification (which she got, passed with a 90%!). I did a mild workout as part of her test (she was being certified as a personal trainer so they needed me to be the someone that she gave corrections/encouragement to) and we had a meal together afterwards. Due to our constant travel and work schedules, we hadn't been able to see each other in months and it was wonderful to catch up. Then it was off to my first shift as Box Office Assistant at On The Boards! We were again presenting two shows, which made for a busy bar and fun training session. I got home again around 11 and went to bed.
Saturday is usually my busiest day. I worked at Calories during the day time, as a server. I normally expedite on Saturdays; Serving means slightly less hours but higher tip percentage, and for me, a lot more stress. I much prefer expediting to serving. After that shift was done I headed home to change and then I went back to work at On The Boards! We had two events on again: Richard II was performing in Emmanuel Church and in The Refinery was Live Five's Season Launch Party. The launch was great fun and included an after party where I tap danced for a while, but I did not get home until around midnight. I then went as directly to bed as I could, because Sunday was a big day for me too!
Sunday I spent the majority of the day as Alice in Wonderland at the Word on the Street Festival to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the book! It was a long day in rather a lot of heat, and I could feel that I was starting to get sick. I thoroughly enjoyed myself regardless and was glad to bring some wonder to the kids at the festival. Once I was changed and done, I called the office of my local NDP candidate Scott Bell to talk about how I could volunteer for them. I also enjoyed a small milkshake because it had been a long and exhausting few days and I wasn't through yet! I had a shift at Persephone later that night as well, which again ended at 11. I went home and prepped for a meeting I had the next morning.
I had a meeting at 10 am that I both stayed up late and woke up early to prep for (it had required a lot of reading). Following said meeting I headed to finish sorting and hand in the bottles for the bottle drive. It took a while but I was glad to finally be done with it, and to not be so attractive to wasps any more. Following that I went and did a bunch of driving and shopping to supply the bar for the show that Embrace is presenting this week. At about 2 pm I got a call from a friend asking me to have a drink, and I was glad for the excuse to take a break and eat! Monday night was my last free evening for the rest of September and I was very glad to spend it relaxing by myself!
Tuesday I managed to sleep in a little bit but my cold was becoming worse. I started taking an online course to earn a certificate in Social Media Management through Hootsuite. I also started work on an audition I would be attending later in the week. I tried to rest up during the day, and then I headed off to work at Calories at 5 pm. It wasn't a bad shift but it was long and I was very sore by the end of it! I went home and had a bath to try to relieve some of the soreness. I then finished my puzzle that I had been working on for some weeks after my cat knocked it off the table and in the reassembling I started to make strides. I went to bed probably at around 2.
Wednesday I worked on my certificate some more, and then I enjoyed a visit with another of my very good friends with whom I haven't spoken in months! I was still sick and after I had been at work for a little while that evening, my boss sent me home to get some more rest. I didn't mind at all! I took some time to unwind and feel relaxed, and work on my audition some more! I had tried to write a blog post, but just when I was almost done, I accidentally deleted the whole thing!
Here we are at today! Today so far I have been chatting with my Artistic Director about how opening night is going to go tonight, I have finished a 500 piece puzzle, I have finished another lesson in my certificate and I have been catching up with friends. Later today I have my audition and opening night for The Wild Dog Waits on the Concrete Path! I also have taken the time to write this blog post as well as create/edit all of the images in it!
In addition to all of the things I have written here about what I did this week, I also managed to plan an overnight trip to Regina for later in the month, post to my (many) social media profiles once or twice a day, read several chapters of A Game of Thrones, make and drink several pots of tea even though I don't like tea, bathe, eat, and somehow sleep! I've also shared many jokes with friends and felt inspired more times than I can count. I have been planning for the future of my own company and keeping my house clean and organized! The only thing I have truly failed to do this week is buy groceries. A lot of my gym time has also turned into recovering time. But I think for that, I can forgive myself.
Here are all of the theatre events that I will be working this week that you won't want to miss out on!
